Rev. John Turlington – Pastor

John was appointed Pastor-In-Charge at Moreland UMC in June of 2016. He has been an elder in the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church since June 2015.
John is originally from Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: Yes, he is a Tar Heel through and through! He moved to Clemson, South Carolina, where received his Masters in English Literature from Clemson University, and met his wife Anita (they were married in May 1990). Shortly after in 1991, he attended Erskine Theological Seminary, where he received his Masters of Divinity, all the while serving as associate campus minister with Baptist Student Ministries at Clemson University. After seminary he served First Baptist Church, Commerce, GA, for 9 years as associate pastor, and served Watkinsville First United Methodist Church, for 9 years as Minister to Youth, Young Adults and Men. As provisional elder, he then served Tuckston United Methodist Church in Athens, GA, for 3 years, after which he was called as associate pastor to Saint Mark, minister of Christian Education and Children, where he served for 2 years before coming to Moreland UMC.
John is married to Anita Turlington, who is an associate professor of English in the English Department at North Georgia University, the Gainesville campus. They have one son, John Haubenreich, an attorney in Nashville, who is married to Sara Beth Myers, also an attorney in Nashville. John and Anita have two grandchildren, Abby and Thomas, whom they love dearly!
John and Anita have enjoyed living the city life in Midtown Atlanta, but now are ready to enjoy the peace and quiet of the Georgia country, with their two dogs who run their lives, Cruella, a Papillion mix , and Pippin, a standard dachshund. John enjoys reading detective and monster fiction, especially zombie fiction. As a matter of fact, he can’t get enough of MONSTERS; the werewolf is his favorite. And, of course, as a Tar Heel fan, he is glued to the TV during March Madness!
